Watch This: A Fall TV Report

Updated: Jan 24, 2022

Black girl magic has set her flag firmly in the Fall 2021 landscape, and I ain't mad: there is a Black woman featured on just about every night of the week on Network and cable, and making her presence felt all over streaming. Lady D and Lady H have been keeping track of the top episodes each week that showcase us, and we've noticed a few things.

If you are looking for news, Gail King, Robin Roberts, and Sheinelle Jones are holding it down on morning network television; JoyAnn Reid in the evenings on MSNBC, and Zerlina Maxwell and Amber Ruffin keep it real on streaming. The Amber Ruffin Show has been picked for exceptional episodes twice, and is the recommended pick to seek out on YouTube or Twitter, if Peacock isn't available.

Tuesdays rule supreme with Queen Sugar, Our Kind of People, Queens, Games People Play, WWE's NXT, and Abbott Elementary. What did you watch this autumn?

CW is creating sleeper hits for Black women. Candice Patton's Iris West has been representing on The Flash since 2014. Since then, Javicia Lesley is leading Batwoman, and 4400 is showing us that Black women contain multitudes throughout time. These shows are flying under the radar and are worth the time investment.

Insecure, Harlem, and Sistas are proving that good things come in fours. We say goodbye to Insecure, but hope that Harlem, Sistas, Run The World, and those yet created have space to tell our stories with friends.

"Queen" was the password for "our kind" of autumn. Queen Latifah ruled our Sundays with The Equalizer; All the Queen's Men shook up streaming; Queens served up both nostalgia and fresh music; and Queen Sugar rooted us in family drama. The queendom truly reigned supreme.

Star Trek Discovery allowed us to reap the harvest that Nichelle Nichols sowed, and we will forever be grateful.
